The Hollies - Concert Review

Hayes, Beck Theatre, 4th February 2004 - by Hamish Pitwell

On Wednesday 4th February I had the pleasure of seeing "The Hollies" live for the second time, and had the added pleasure of being introduced to Bobby Elliott, in my mind the greatest drummer I have ever seen.

My name is Hamish Pitwell, I am 14 years old and play drums in a 60’s influenced band called "Small Affair". I’ve grown up listening to The Beatles, Stones, and Small Faces and of course the fabulous Hollies.

My dad, on the spur of the moment, booked two tickets last year to see the Hollies at Guildford civic, I was blown away; I never realized that a band could sound so good live.

My dad, my 17 year old sister and I were present at the opening night of the 2004 "Back in town’ tour", and they sounded even better.

I realize how great a guitarist Tony Hicks is, some of his solos were verging on pure heavy rock.

Keyboard player Ian Parker managed to sound like a complete orchestra on the classics "He aint heavy", "The air that I breathe" and my all time favorite "soldier’s song".

The rest of the band, Alan Coates on guitar, also providing some fantastic vocals and Ray Stiles on bass all came up to the same brilliant standards, all providing fantastic harmonies throughout the set.

@Vocalist, Carl Wayne was absolutely outstanding, a pure showman who works brilliantly with the audience.

I must say one of the highlights of my life was meeting Bobby. What a nice guy to talk to who has encouraged me with some useful drumming tips.

When I asked my sister, who is a vocalist with a new age pop band ‘deja-who’, what she thought of the hollies she said ‘ they rock!!!!!’

Good luck with the rest of the tour, we’ll see you in June at Wisley gardens.
