The Hollies - Concert Review

Hayes, Beck Theatre, 4th February 2004 - by Colin James

This was my first Hollies concert since before Alan retired and I went along with a little worry about what to expect. I now know that any fears were groundless of course.

What a fantastic concert. I took somebody special for a birthday treat. While she had always enjoyed Hollies music, I think she was a little surprised by what she saw. "The Hollies Rock!!!!" was heard on a number of occasions. I believe we have a new convert.

As for the gig itself, Tony was, as always fantastic. What a great musician he is. His solo's were wonderful. The "Sultans of swing" style ending to "Look through any window" was out of this world. I loved the Citar on "The baby" too but my favourite is always "Stop stop stop." Every time Tony put down one guitar I was willing him to pick up the banjo. When he did eventually pick it up it was worth the wait.

Bobby was, as always the back bone of the band. Brilliant.

I was impressed by Alan. As I say its been a while since I have seen the Band but Alan gets better and better. I never realised what a lovely voice he had before. Could you tell me a bit of his history? What did he do before he joined the band?

It was nice to see Ray get out the front for a bit? I was not expecting "Tiger Feet" but it got me out of my seat.

@The keyboards were great though I was a little mystified by the stroll with the accordion. Having said that it was nice to see one being used, being an accordionist myself.

Like I said, I didn't know what to expect with Carl but I need not have worried. What a wonderful performance. Funny, topical and a great voice. His performance of "Soldiers Song" was breathtaking. I don't know much about these things but it strikes me that it is not an easy song to sing. It sent shivers down my spine. Its great to get the Move songs in there too though I would have loved to have heard "Flowers in the rain." Perhaps one day.

All in all a great night out and at such a nice venue too.

Cheers
