The Hollies - Concert Review

Derby Assembly Rooms, 17th November 2004 - by Jeff Martin

I have stopped counting how many times I have seen The Hollies and this time so soon after the sad loss of Carl Wayne, it was with just a little trepidation that I took my seat. That soon disappeared as the guys took to the stage and were into “Stop in the Name of Love”. From the first chorus I new Peter Howarth’s vocals fitted the group perfectly. As for the other new guy Steve Lauri who had replaced Alan Coates on rhythm guitar, well he fitted in brilliantly and I admit I didn’t even notice him at first. That is a real complement.

The first half just flew as well, as brilliant renditions of hits like “Here I Go Again”, “Just One Look” and “On A Carousel” were rattled off one after the other.

Peter showed his talent on the acoustic guitar on the wonderful “Sandy”.

The highlight of the first half was “Gasoline Alley Bred”

The tribute paid to Carl was just right, done with much respect to a talented singer/performer and I’m sure he would appreciate The Hollies version of “Flowers in the Rain” sang by Ray Stiles.

Solders song also sent shivers down the spine.

Among my all time favorite Hollies songs is “The Day that Curly Billy Shot Down Crazy Sam McGee” which I don’t remember ever seeing the band perform live before, so you can imagine my total excitement when they opened the second half with it. It was worth the entrance fee alone.

It was good to see “I Can’t Tell The Bottom From the Top” included with a wonderful vocal by Steve.

Another highlight was Tony’s excellent performance on “Too Young To Be Married”. Ian’s accordion on “We’re Through” was superb as always and I loved “Stop Stop Stop”, which is always a highlight for me.

The whole show was held together by the brilliant drumming of Bobby Elliott who is without doubt still the best in the business. The standard finish to the show, “Air That I Breath”, “Long Cool Women” and Ray in his energetic “Tiger Feet” had everyone on their feet and calling for more.

“He Ain’t Heavy” finally closed the show on what was an outstanding concert full of exceptional musical talent and wonderful enjoyment.

I hope the Peter stays with the Hollies for many years to come.

Thanks guys for another memorable night.
